Parks Agricultural Land Capability Assessment

The City of Richmond retained Madrone Agrologists to complete a Land Capability for Agriculture (LCA) Assessment for potential agricultural activities at the Terra Nova Rural Park and South Dyke Agricultural Lands. Each of these areas were approximately 25 hectares in size and covered multiple parcels with a variety of land uses, including tree nurseries, agricultural f ields, community gardens, and municipal parks. This assessment included a review of regulations under the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) and a compilation of provincial data on soils and agricultural capability. Madrone’s Agrologists then completed field investigations to determine

  1. Soil characteristics and soil fertility
  2. Climatic capability and soil moisture balance
  3. Invasive plant coverage and potential management
  4. Hydrology and functionality of existing drainage infrastructure

Madrone regularly works with landowners to provide support with regulatory permitting through provincial governing bodies (e.g., Agricultural Land Commission). We also develop suitable strategies for drainage and provide erosion and sediment control plans.
