Chemainus River Right Bank Recovery

Madrone is very experienced in producing and implementing Environmental Management Plans as part of construction projects to ensure protection of sensitive ecological resources. Madrone’s Biologists were recently involved in a project on the Chemainus River that addressed erosion concerns resulting from the significant atmospheric river event that occurred in November 2021. The Chemainus River provides critical habitat for a range of aquatic species, including four species of Pacific salmon, Steelhead, Coastal Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, and a variety of amphibians.

This project involved re-armouring the right bank of the Chemainus River using varying sizes of rock, which required working in the river channel. During instream and riparian work, Madrone Biologists provided expert advice and on-site monitoring to ensure that negative impacts were avoided. Our work involved site isolation, salvaging fish and amphibians from isolated areas, water quality monitoring, and liaising with construction crews to enable effective implementation of mitigation measures.
