Landscape Reserve Design in the Great Bear Rainforest

The Great Bear Rainforest Order (GBRO) sets out objectives to guide implementation of ecosystem-based management (EBM) in the Great Bear Rainforest plan area (GBR). The GBRO includes an objective to prepare Landscape Reserve Designs (LRDs) for each Landscape Unit in the GBR. Madrone is actively working with stakeholders of the GBR to develop draft LRDs. LRDs are a mid-scale planning product, prepared in the context of higher level strategic land use designations (e.g., conservancies and ecological reserves). The purpose of LRDs is to identify how GBRO objectives for biodiversity, Indigenous forest-values, wildlife habitat, and managed forest can best be addressed in each Landscape Unit. LRDs are intended to guide and create a more transparent and stable environment for commercial forestry planning and management.

Madrone Biologists and Foresters began providing support for these complex management strategies in 2020, through engagement with the Ministry of Forests. Our technical expertise and abilities to foster quality working relationships have been highly valuable to this project. We are very motivated to continue our work on projects that will govern long-term management of our forests and natural resources.
